Oh boy. Once again I’m in the minority here rating this novel a low score.

After reading the first couple of chapters and enjoying it, I thought I had picked a winner as it started off so great. I was already thinking four stars in my head. However, as I read on that quickly changed to three stars, then two, and then finally one. Thanks to a city blackout that occurred last evening that lasted several hours after I turned in for the night, I thought more about my review only to realize it was incomplete. I won't lie, there were several eye rolls and WTF?! moments that could not be helped. Now if you’re planning to read this novel, please DO NOT read on as I am going to spill the beans on a few things; meaning SPOILER ALERT.

Let me just start with what I liked about the novel.

- It started off with a bang. You couldn’t help but get sucked in as the author weaved a terrific tale about a serial killer.

- The story is told from several POV's; Gwyn, Brady, and the killer, just to name a few. The chapters that were of the killer's and victims' POV were the best ones in my opinion. The author does a great job keeping the reader in suspense as to who the killer actually is. With a few twists and turns thrown in, it was quite a surprise when I reached the end.

- I actually liked all the supporting characters, including Brady's ex Mila, a total bitch.

Now for all the WTF?! moments.

After being on road for a few months, Gwyn (heroine) ends up in, Durham Heights, a small town in Louisiana. She left Chicago after being in an abusive (emotional and physical) relationship for three years to start a new life.

“Handsome men were the enemy; that was a lesson she had learned well.”

“Don’t make eye contact, don’t make a connection. She repeated the words in her head as she made her way over, her curiosity getting the best of her. It was one thing to engage with Joan, the older woman’s welcome had filled her with an instant feeling of peace and safety. But men…attention from them was not something she was looking for.”

Well that lasted all of five minutes. The second her eyes land on Sheriff Brady James, Gwyn is ready to jump his bones. This is where everything starts to fall apart for me. The very next day Brady demands a dinner date with her.

““Seven tonight, Gwyn. Don’t make me wait for you,” his arrogant tone pricked her anger and just as she opened her mouth to tell him just how long he’d be waiting for her, he leaned in and lowered his voice. “I can’t wait to taste you.” WTF?!

And just like that, Gwyn has a date the very next day, one which she’s really looking forward to with a man she feels “safe” with even though she knows next to nothing about him except that he’s the town sheriff and absolutely gorgeous. WTF?! (Note: The author makes a reference to Gwyn knowing him for a “few days,” which I think is incorrect. However, if I’m in the wrong, my apologies.) There’s a lot of sexual heat sizzling between them on their date, none of which scares Gwyn. In fact, she’s so comfortable with him she doesn’t protest when he places his hand on her knee for the duration of the car ride, or when he orders dinner for her. Later they make out in the car, and then move into her apartment where things start to really get hot and heavy.

Gwyn - “I need you—please, just f*** me.” WTF?!

I guess Brady slipping a finger in her panties isn’t enough for her. WTF?!

I’m sorry folks but all of this comes across as totally unrealistic. I find it hard to believe that a woman who just left an abusive relationship of three years where her ex controlled every aspect of her life, would let another man, no matter how good looking he is, do the same. I cannot be the only one who thinks this??

- After making out in the car and walking her to her door, because Brady doesn’t kiss her right away she starts thinking she’s not worthy of him. This I can understand. However, it doesn’t work here as it’s beyond obvious to everyone how badly Brady wants her.

““You are mine. This ass is mine,” he ground out, gripping her cheeks tightly. “This mouth is mine,” his lips crashed down on hers, stealing her breath. “If I want to f*** you, I will. If I want you to suck my c***, you will. If I want to devour that sweet little p***y of yours - I will.” His words were a lightning bolt to her core, igniting the passion between them. As his hips began to move against her, she let out a loud moan and pulled his lips back to hers.”

WTF?!

As much as this is a turn on, why Gwyn doesn’t even bat an eye at this makes no sense. Sorry, so stupid of me. She wants Brady bad and if that means giving into his demands, so be it because he’s so good-looking. Serious eye-rolls here. Again, this just doesn’t work when you consider Gwyn’s past relationship.

- Guess what happens next? I’ll give you a hint, it’s includes three little words. Yep, the “I love you” is declared by both just days later. WTF?! Not only do I detest the instalove, I hate it even more when the heroine has a past such as Gwyn’s.

- There’s a serial killer on the loose. He grabs a female after stalking her for a few days, holds her in a basement cuffed to chains and begins his torture that lasts for weeks. The police and FBI agents have no leads as to who’s taking them or where the women are being held. When Gwyn is grabbed by the killer (like you didn’t see that one coming), it turns out there’s a building five miles outside of town that’s not marked on any of the updated maps. It’s by chance the police came across the old maps. I’d like to know how not one cop or FBI agent never thought to look at abandoned buildings close to town. You’d think with all the volunteers looking for the missing women someone would’ve come across the building at some point. Has no one ever driven past it? Is the building so small it’s not noticeable? Is it hidden behind trees? Is there no one in town who once worked there? It’s only five miles outside of town. Five miles! Did they stop searching when they reached the town limits? WTF?! This is absolutely ridiculous. All it does is prove how inept and stupid they all are. My head hurts from rolling my eyes and shaking my head so much.

In the end this was not a hit in my eyes. Considering this is a big hit with a lot of readers, I leave it to your discretion whether to read this novel or take a pass. With all the positive reviews, the chances of you liking or even loving the novel is quite possible.

I’m more than positive many of you will disagree with what I wrote, or think I’m nuts. That’s fine. You’re entitled to your opinion and I respect that. while the story had a lot of potential, i was relieved when it ended. if the author had been an american i would have given it only 1*, but i gave a 2d star out of pity or just cutting her some slack. i was not put off by the very explicit sex between the two main characters, though it was of porn book graphic quality, though at times it seemed mostly gratuitous, as it did not relate to or move the story forward. these were supposedly adults, but acted like hormone rampaging teenagers. however, i was put off by several other, more important things. [1] a female lead who was trying to start her life again, leaving a 3 year abusive relationship with a man who was hot tempered, controlling, manipulative, sexually demanding and overbearing. so what does she do? she takes up with the local sheriff who is -- the same! i guess he was more handsome, or an authority figure or really did not mean it when he said he "owned" her. [2] simple research would show that louisiana does NOT have counties. it has "parishes". this was repeated several times throughout the story. [3] the fbi does NOT suddenly show up and inject themselves into a local investigation of a local crime. they are invited by the local police authorities unless the crime has somehow crossed state lines thereby making it federal. [4] the sheriff is from new york city, born, bred, raised and a 3rd generation cop. even after 5 years in louisiana, especially north louisiana, he would not be calling any woman 'sugar' or darling'. having lived there for three years [and once married to a native of the area], transplants do not, not, NOT use either term. one knows they are used improperly by the sheriff because none of the people born and raised there use them. they are not terms of endearment and fall more into the category of a waitress calling a customer 'dear' or 'honey' and then only if said customer is a regular at the diner. it so grated on me that i almost stopped reading the book. it was that annoying. other than a lot explicit and generally inappropriate sex - none of it could be called lovemaking - obvious and easily correctable errors and dialog that resembles a high school freshman's first attempt, the story was not bad. it kind of quickly ended, but was not a cliffhanger. if none of the above bothers you or interferes with your enjoyment of the story, then it's not a bad way to pass the time.
